OK Meg, we know your secret now – it’s lurchers. It’s fascinating how people write and you certainly make it clear that even if someone has flair, they also need biro-loads of writing muscle AND mental tenacity. Good luck with “There is no dog”… (I thought that was a long ago reference to your mum’s illness. Clearly I’m not always paying proper attention).

I looked at the picture first and thought ‘Oh, I SEE, it’s all about the fountain pen….’ And then I clicked through and read your really beautiful piece about writing. Hungarians, horses, the subconscious…it is indeed quite complex. But also inspiring.

    Thanks for sharing, Meg.

Someone may find this link fascinating:
    http://www.jeffvandermeer.com/2009/04/29/finch-from-inception-to-interior-layout/

It’s Jeff Vandermeer’s blog, and a detailed look at how he wrote Finch (complete with a sample of editor mark-ups etc).

For those unfortunate few people living in a cave without any bookstores nearby and with limited wifi to borrow, Jeff Vandermeer is an incredible person and story teller, and Finch is his latest masterpiece.
