If you love Flambards, you should try the Pennington Trilogy by the same author (the trilogy also links to two other horsey books, Fly by Night and The Team). That’s if you haven’t already, of course…

Love your selection and agree with a lot of it but I would definately include Dodie Smith’s I capture the castle, a couple of Noel Streatfields, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Harriet the Spy and On the Banks of the plum creek to name a few. Also Look Homeward Angel by Thomas Wolfe (surely a natural bed fellow to Lawrence and W.Maxwell? ) Really enjoyed your talk at Hay on Saturday – thought you were very inspiring, clever and funny (I was one of the middle aged, slightly over excited gaggle at the signing). Spent that afternoon in the sun reading What I Was – beautiful, touching and painfully, achingly true. Thanks.
So nice to hear from you Lydia, and I DID search all the pubs. Well, most of them. I adored Ballet Shoes, Wolves of WC, anything Laura Ingalls Wilder, and PARTICULARLY Harriet The Spy. I still have my childhood copy. And you know when i was talking about the One Book I got for Christmas? That was Little House on the Prairie. Harriet The Spy was a birthday present. I didn’t get to I Capture the Castle till after I wrote How I Live Now, which might have been a bit too late. If you can ever find a copy of The Good Master, buy it instantly. And so glad you liked What I Was. Hay was great…. xxx
How can you wish you wrote these? These books are positively nothing compared to your books! Believe in what you’ve written!
